JOURNAL - 1990 - MARCH
2 March 1990
A real treat for me this week, a Mike Westbrook concert - at the newly converted Electric cinema (what again? yes again). A good few years have passed since I last saw Westbrook’s gang. Abstinence has clearly made my heart grow stronger, but I cannot explain why I should have this one obsession with a band when if asked what other bands I like, I couldn’t name one, not one. I like to think, of course, that Westbrook is rather unique and special, and that thus I have extremely discerning taste to have picked him out from the pack; but surely he cannot be so special as to warrant sole allegiance from me. I have a number of his compositions on tape: ‘Blake’, ‘Cortege’, ‘On Duke’s Birthday’, ‘Variations on Rossini’, ‘The Ass’ (these last two being recordings for Radio Three). There is a tape of this latest show: ‘Off Abbey Road’, for which I have sent off a mail order. It will be the only original recording I own, since the others are all taped from radio or records. My allegiance must date back to when I had too little money to fritter on such things.
