BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY
There is no information about Windham readily available on the internet. He was an officer in the Coldsream Guards, and then went to the Crimea as assistant Quarter-Master General under Sir George Cathcart, and then under Lord Raglan. He is most well known for his part in the assault on Redan, one of the Russian fortifications at Sebastopol. Subsequently, he was appointed Governor of a part of Sebastopol. On returning to England, he was knighted, and served briefly as an MP. He was sent to India during the mutiny, and also commanded forces in Canada. Although his published diaries only seem to cover the Crimean War, the Hertfordshire Archives claims ot have diaries from the 1830s.

IMPORTANT NOTES AND CAUTIONS: 1) The first line of basic information may be incomplete in several ways: some historical figures have different names (titles, pen-names); their birth and death dates may be unknown or uncertain (g - guess, c - circa); similarly, their occupations may be unknown, or they may have had other jobs; and, for early diarists, I've used 'British' a bit too freely. 2) The biographical summary may not be accurate.
