Lockhart, Robert Bruce ___ 1887-1970 ___ British ___ diplomat writer

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY
There is not much biographical information about Lockhart readily available on the internet, although the full text of his memoirs can be found at the First World War document archive site. As a young man, he joined the civil service. By 1912 had been appointed a vice-consul for the British delegation to Russia in Moscow. Later, he was promoted to consul-general, and was in Russia when Nicholas II was overthrown. On returning to London, he was sent back to Russia as head of a special mission - to help with efforts to overthrow the Bolshevik government. After the attempted assassination of Vladimir Lenin, Lockhart was arrested. However, he was exchanged for Soviet officials being held by the British. Lockhart continued working for the Foreign Office until 1922. Thereafter, he worked in banking. During the Second World War he served as director-general of the Political Warfare Executive.

IMPORTANT NOTES AND CAUTIONS: 1) The first line of basic information may be incomplete in several ways: some historical figures have different names (titles, pen-names); their birth and death dates may be unknown or uncertain (g - guess, c - circa); similarly, their occupations may be unknown, or they may have had other jobs; and, for early diarists, I've used 'British' a bit too freely. 2) The biographical summary may not be accurate. It was compiled quickly from various sources, mostly on the internet, and the facts were not checked anywhere near as rigorously as they would have been if they'd been intended for publication in a printed form. 3) The journal dates and descriptors (which are in no particular order) must be treated with caution: since I have not examined the diaries myself, the descriptors are only guesses based on bibliographies, anthologies and internet biographies. 4) For the biography and etext links, I have ignored any sites with charges, and I have avoided, wherever possible, those with pop-ups or too much advertising. I have limited myself to providing three etext links where there is some variety between them. 5) For the original manuscript links, I have limited myself to providing a maximum of two (although, for a few diarists, their original diaries are held in more than two places). 6) I have provided the titles - chosen randomly - for up to three printed editions of the diaries.

SIGNIFICANT . .

. . . is the world’s greatest online anthology of diary extracts. It is pre-sented by calendar day, in the same way as books such as The Assassin’s Cloak and The Faber Book of Diaries. However, this anthology includes more, and many longer, extracts than is possible in a published book. For each quoted extract there is a link to a Diary Review article with: further ex-tracts, biographical information, contexts, a portrait, and links to online sources/etexts.

A fictional memoir spanning the whole of the 21st cent-ury: one man’s - Kip Fenn’s - frank account, some-times acutely painful and some-times surprisingly joyful, of his three partners, and his career in inter-national diplomacy working to tackle the rich-poor divide.
