De Pougy, Liane ___ 1869-1950 ___ French ___ escort

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY
Anne-Marie Chassaigne was born in Brittany, educated in a convent, and married at 16. After two years of maltreatment by her husband she ran away to Paris, changed her name to Liane, and became a much-talked about dancer. She had a string of rich and famous lovers who gave her expensive gifts. She also loved women, and, in the last years of the 18th century fell for an American heiress called Natalie Barney. For a short while, until Barney left her, the couple scandalised Paris society. Subsequently, the betrayed Liane wrote a thinly-disguised autobiographical novel, 'Sapphique'. In 1910, she married Georges Ghika, a Romanian prince, and she changed her name back to Anne-Marie and called herself Princess Ghika. The marriage lasted for 16 years, until Ghika left her for a younger woman. In the mid-1940s, after the death of her estranged husband, Liane joined a convent of nuns, and used her time to care for abandoned children.

IMPORTANT NOTES AND CAUTIONS: 1) The first line of basic information may be incomplete in several ways: some historical figures have different names (titles, pen-names); their birth and death dates may be unknown or uncertain (g - guess, c - circa); similarly, their occupations may be unknown, or they may have had other jobs; and, for early diarists, I've used 'British' a bit too freely. 2) The biographical summary may not be accurate. It was compiled quickly from various sources, mostly on the internet, and the facts were not checked anywhere near as rigorously as they would have been if they'd been intended for publication in a printed form. 3) The journal dates and descriptors (which are in no particular order) must be treated with caution: since I have not examined the diaries myself, the descriptors are only guesses based on bibliographies, anthologies and internet biographies. 4) For the biography and etext links, I have ignored any sites with charges, and I have avoided, wherever possible, those with pop-ups or too much advertising. I have limited myself to providing three etext links where there is some variety between them. 5) For the original manuscript links, I have limited myself to providing a maximum of two (although, for a few diarists, their original diaries are held in more than two places). 6) I have provided the titles - chosen randomly - for up to three printed editions of the diaries.

AND SO MADE
SIGNIFICANT . .

. . . is the world’s greatest online anthology of diary extracts. It is pre-sented by calendar day, in the same way as books such as The Assassin’s Cloak and The Faber Book of Diaries. However, this anthology includes more, and many longer, extracts than is possible in a published book. For each quoted extract there is a link to a Diary Review article with: further ex-tracts, biographical information, contexts, a portrait, and links to online sources/etexts.

A fictional memoir spanning the whole of the 21st cent-ury: one man’s - Kip Fenn’s - frank account, some-times acutely painful and some-times surprisingly joyful, of his three partners, and his career in inter-national diplomacy working to tackle the rich-poor divide.
