De Bassompierre, Francois ___ 1579-1646 ___ French ___ soldier diplomat

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY
De Bassompierre was born at the castle of Harrouel, Lorraine, into an old family which had served the dukes of Burgundy and Lorraine for generations. He studied in Bavaria and Italy, and was introduced to the court of King Henry IV in 1598. For the next 20 years or so he served as a soldier for the crown. As a result of his efforts during the Huguenot rising of 1621-1622 he was appointed a Marshal of France. He was with the army of the King during the siege of La Rochelle in 1628, and in 1629 distinguished himself in the campaign against the rebels of Languedoc. In the 1620s, he also served as a diplomat in Spain, Switzerland and Britain. He was secretly married to Louise Marguerite, widow of François, prince de Conti, and through her became implicated in the plot to overthrow Richelieu. On Richelieu's orders he was imprisoned in the Bastille, where he remained until Richelieu's death in 1643. Thereafter, he retired to the castle of Tillières in Normandy. His memoirs are considered an important historical source.

IMPORTANT NOTES AND CAUTIONS: 1) The first line of basic information may be incomplete in several ways: some historical figures have different names (titles, pen-names); their birth and death dates may be unknown or uncertain (g - guess, c - circa); similarly, their occupations may be unknown, or they may have had other jobs; and, for early diarists, I've used 'British' a bit too freely. 2) The biographical summary may not be accurate. It was compiled quickly from various sources, mostly on the internet, and the facts were not checked anywhere near as rigorously as they would have been if they'd been intended for publication in a printed form. 3) The journal dates and descriptors (which are in no particular order) must be treated with caution: since I have not examined the diaries myself, the descriptors are only guesses based on bibliographies, anthologies and internet biographies. 4) For the biography and etext links, I have ignored any sites with charges, and I have avoided, wherever possible, those with pop-ups or too much advertising. I have limited myself to providing three etext links where there is some variety between them. 5) For the original manuscript links, I have limited myself to providing a maximum of two (although, for a few diarists, their original diaries are held in more than two places). 6) I have provided the titles - chosen randomly - for up to three printed editions of the diaries.

SIGNIFICANT . .

. . . is the world’s greatest online anthology of diary extracts. It is pre-sented by calendar day, in the same way as books such as The Assassin’s Cloak and The Faber Book of Diaries. However, this anthology includes more, and many longer, extracts than is possible in a published book. For each quoted extract there is a link to a Diary Review article with: further ex-tracts, biographical information, contexts, a portrait, and links to online sources/etexts.

A fictional memoir spanning the whole of the 21st cent-ury: one man’s - Kip Fenn’s - frank account, some-times acutely painful and some-times surprisingly joyful, of his three partners, and his career in inter-national diplomacy working to tackle the rich-poor divide.
